Newport News, VA – With a huge win coming this past Saturday against the Trinity College Bantams, the #19 Williams College Ephs (3-3-0) (Inside Lacrosse) headed to their 3
rd straight away game against the #5 (Inside Lacrosse) Christopher Newport University Captains (6-2). Looking to end the trio of road games on a high note, Williams came out flying. Quarter after quarter the Ephs never let the Captains start building significant momentum. Whether it was a huge face-off win from
Ian Kim, or a big goal in response from
Calvin Caputo, it was a great display of mental fortitude from the Williams College Ephs that delivered a huge 18-12 road win.
With the rain holding off, but the temperature sitting around 40, Williams would find the back of the net with a great backdoor tap-in coming from
Calvin Caputo who found
Will Doran right off the back post. The next ten minutes would be a battle up and down the field, both teams locking down their D-Zones, and countering with methodical offensive. After a great pick in front of the cage,
Calvin Caputo sent a laser past the Captain's tender to put the Ephs up 2-1.
Rain began falling in the second quarter that started with the score even at 2-2. That wouldn't last long, however, as
Calvin Caputo found his second goal of the day with a great feed from Finlay Macknight. Next, a great, left-handed over the shoulder shot from
Will Doran began to really put the pressure on the Captains' defense. That pressure would soon lead to penalties and the Ephs would make no mistake on capitalizing off those.
Nick Bates and then
Calvin Caputo, rounding out his hat-trick, would both score on the man advantage. With goals coming from Perse Glavin and Finlay Macknight, Williams would walk away from the first half up 9-4 over the Captains.
The second half would begin with another display of skill from
Ian Kim. Kim's effort in the dot, as well as his second effort up the field, were on constant display today. Another aspect of today's game that the Ephs were capitalizing on were the fast transitions out of the zone.
Will Singleton demonstrated as he blitzed up the field, finding
Calvin Caputo, who sent a missile on net to start the second half scoring for the Ephs. One more goal in this frame would leave the Ephs of Williams College up 11-6.
A goal that could not have been more deserved came right off the face-off to begin the 4
th quarter.
Ian Kim came up with a huge win in the dot, sprinted up field with an amazing individual effort, finding the back of the net boosting the Ephs to a 12-7 lead. Resisting the pressure from the Captains' offense, Williams again responded with a great pair of goals in the middle of this frame coming from
Calvin Caputo and
Nick Bates. The quarter would then begin to open up for both sides, as back and forth goals were traded between the two teams. The mental toughness of the Ephs today, never letting the Captains build momentum, was a huge part of an even bigger win for the Ephs. Williams tallied 7 goals in the fourth quarter, pushing the pace of the game and earning a great win. Eph head coach
George McCormack had this to say after the game: "Great team win. Our offense answered each goal that they had and it kept us in the game. I thought our defense also showed up and made it hard for CNU to get any easy goals."
The Williams College Ephs head home, and back into NESCAC play, as they look to build off this win against the Connecticut College Camels at home on Farley-Lamb Field Saturday at 1 PM.
