Worcester, MA – The Ephs completed competition at the Northeast Regionast. At each weight class, the semifinal, finals, and remaining consolation matches were held. The following three Ephs competed: Caleb Seyfried at 149, Peter Kane at 157, and William Smith at 174. They inspired with strong performances against the best competition around, as each of them placed in the top 6 of their respective weight class. Also, as a collective, the Ephs placed 10th overall.
Caleb Seyfried opened his account today with a win against a familiar opponent Elijah Cyr of Castleton. In fact, Seyfried lost to Cyr earlier in the season at a dual meet, in a tightly contested 5-4 decision. By securing a convincing 7-0 victory today, Seyfried, once again showed how he has constantly improved through this year's campaign. After this bout, Seyfried qualified for the 5th place match, and earned another win, this time by a 19-4 tech fall. Seyfried gained momentum late into the first period accumulating a 7-0 advantage. From there, he continued to score take downs and maintained his lead into the latter two periods.
Peter Kane stood out as he built upon impressive displays from yesterday. He won his first match of the day, the 157 semifinals, by a 4-1 decision. A take down, late in the third, period solidified his lead. In the final, Kane grappled opponent Cooper Pontelandolfo of NYU in a very technical and defensive bout. The first period was scoreless. It wasn't until Kane took a 1-0 lead with an escape point that any points were on the board. This close contest continued into overtime, and in the end, Kane lost by a narrow 2-1 margin. Considering Kane has just returned from injury, placing second at Regionals is quite an incredible feat.
Captain William Smith placed at Regionals as well. He finished in 6th place, and his effort was highlighted by a thrilling performance against opponent Adam Frost of Trinity. The bout was a highly contested affair with both wrestlers taking turns holding the lead. After being behind 11-7 going into the third period, Smith swung the momentum back in his favor, leveling the match at 12-12. Unfortunately, in overtime, Smith fell to his opponent. Nevertheless, this contest was a superb display of two skillful and determined wrestlers.
In summary, the Ephs produced inspiring performances all weekend and should hold their heads high as they travel back to Williams. A special shout-out must be given to the seniors within this 2023-24 Williams wrestling squad. They led by example and fostered a positive atmosphere for the young core within this team. Looking ahead, Peter Kane, who placed 2nd has secured a place at the NCAA DIII National Championship meet. More information on this will be provided as the event approaches.
