Cambridge, MA — The midweek matchup saw the Williams College Ephs (7-6) head across the state to visit the MIT Beavers (4-9). A back-and-forth first half ensured the teams entered the final thirty minutes all squared up. Hat Tricks from
Gavin Timoney and
Calvin Caputo led the Ephs' offense as they were able to pull ahead late and defeat the Beavers by a score of 14-12.
It was a quick start to the contest in Cambridge as the home side found the back of the net just forty-five seconds into the game. Williams answered right back as
Ryan Johnson set up
Gavin Timoney for the tying goal just forty seconds later. MIT retook the lead minutes later, but Timoney once again had a response, this time twenty seconds after the Beavers' goal. Rapid fire goals continued as MIT scored on the ensuing face off. For the third consecutive time, Williams responded within a minute with
Harrison Cross tying the game at 3-3. The action finally cooled, until the Beavers once again took the lead on two successive goals.
Will Doran clawed the Ephs back into the game before
Gavin Timoney completed his first-quarter hat trick to tie the game 5-5.
The Ephs learned from their early first quarter mistakes and corrected them in the second frame. Finlay Macknight followed up his eleventh goal of the season by dishing a pass to
Drew Nicholson for the score seconds later to put the Ephs ahead 7-5. The Beavers did not allow the momentum to build for long, promptly pulling a goal back with eight minutes remaining in the half. MIT then fired home two goals in a minute to retake the lead, 8-7. With under a minute remaining,
Ryan Johnson hit
Will Doran in the slot who hammered it home to tie the game at 8 heading into the locker room.
Williams was the first to strike in second half.
Calvin Caputo deposited home his thirty-fourth goal of the year to make it 9-8 Ephs. This lead was quickly erased by the Beavers who scored on the following possession. Following an MIT turnover, the Ephs would capitalize as Caputo finished off his second of the game to regain the lead. His fellow senior,
Pearse Glavin, then collected a pass from
Harrison Cross and scored with a man-advantage to make it 11-9. In the final two minutes of the quarter, each team would tack on a point with
Bjorn Davidson drawing the goal for the Ephs.
Calvin Caputo completed his hat trick two minutes into the final quarter to extend the Ephs' lead to 13-10. MIT responded with a goal to keep themselves in the game with ten minutes left on the clock before pulling within one goal minutes later.
Matt Wetmore then came up with a huge save to keep the Ephs a goal ahead of the Beavers. On the ensuing possession, Finlay Macknight fed a pass from behind the net to
Tucker Catlin who ripped home a shot to give the Ephs breathing room. With a final clear attempt to get back into the game, MIT would turn the ball over and hand the Ephs possession. Williams ran out the final minute on the clock to leave Cambridge 14-12 victors over MIT.
After the win, Eph head coach
George McCormack said, "Cal, Gavin and Finlay rose to the occasion tonight which allowed us to get this tough road win. Our defense played physical all night and created turnovers that led to extra possessions."
The Ephs next play Saturday at noon as when they host Colby College on Farley-Lamb Field at noon.
