Middleton, CT- After losing two consecutive games to Wesleyan Saturday in a doubleheader, The Williams College baseball team showcased a resilient comeback, securing an 11-5 victory over Wesleyan.
Jakob Martin started on the mound for Williams and pitched tough through 4.2 innings. He finished with two strikeouts and allowed three earned runs.
Teddy Massingham followed, pitching through 3.1 innings. Massingham would walk away with the win, after notching four strikeouts and only allowing a single earned run.
Nick Skiera pitched yhe ninth inning for Williams and did not allow a run.
The ball game began with a series of tense innings where both teams' defenses stood tall. The initial innings set the tone for what was to become a nail-biting contest, with neither team able to break the deadlock until the bottom of the third. It was then that Wesleyan would rally with two runs scoring on a triple from Ernie Little who capitalized on the bases being loaded.
In a pivotal fifth inning, the game took a significant turn. Williams initiated a scoring spree, capitalizing on opportunities to score three runs and take the a 3-2 lead. Scoring for Williams was
Henry Juan,
Brendan Stannard, and
Will Scott. Wesleyan tied the game up 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth after Luke LaSaracin scored.
Williams would double their score in sixth. The rally began with
Sasha Palma executed a perfectly placed bunt single, allowing
Luca Lopetrone to smartly advance to third. Williams then capitalized when
Owen McHugh lifted a sacrifice fly, allowing Lopetrone to tag up and score, inching Williams closer on the scoreboard. The offensive momentum continued for Williams as
Henry Juan delivered a timely single to center field, driving in
Sasha Palma for another crucial run. The inning's scoring was capped off with
Will Scott's RBI single that allowed Juan to cross the plate, further extending Williams' lead and solidifying their offensive rally.
Teddy Massingham then pitched a clean inning and the Ephs left the sixth up by three runs with a score of 6-3.
The Williams offensive assault continued into the seventh where they added two more runs. A
Sasha Palma sacrifice fly resulted in
James O'Connor making it home.
Owen McHugh then added his second run of the game after a Juan single.
Wesleyan mounted a late rally in the bottom of the eighth, scoring two runs to narrow the gap to 8-5.
The ninth inning saw Williams decisively sealing their victory by adding three more runs, bringing the final score to 11-5.
After the game Williams head coach
Bill Barrale talked about being incredibly proud of the team for putting yesterday's two losses behind them saying, "Today was a new day and a new chance to go out their and execute and we did that today. We were much more relaxed and you could feel that difference on the field."
