Williamstown, MA- In a thrilling game that saw numerous momentum swings, Williams College stormed out of the gates with an electrifying start against Skidmore College, only for Skidmore to mount a dramatic comeback, culminating in a 16-12 victory for Skidmore.
The game began with Williams setting the field ablaze, racking up an impressive four runs in the first inning alone. Their offense was led by pivotal hits that saw
Mike Giove's double to left center that drove in
Henry Juan, followed by Kedar Veeraswam doubling to bring
Anthony Lods and
Marcus Burrell home. This fiery start was a showcase of Williams' aggressive and strategic approach to the game.Â
Not content with just a four-run lead, Williams continued their onslaught in the second inning, adding three more runs. This included
Mike Giove's spectacular triple to right field, bringing Juan and
Owen McHugh home, further compounding Skidmore's woes. This 7-1 lead by Williams after just two innings seemed to set the stage for a potential rout. However, Skidmore wasn't ready to fold. They began their climb back into the game in the third inning, adding a crucial run, thanks to Zachary Leiderman's sacrifice fly RBI, which brought Owen Roy home. This marked the beginning of Skidmore's gritty comeback, chipping away at Williams' lead.Â
The real game-changer came in the fifth inning when Skidmore unleashed a six-run barrage to take the lead for the first time. Key to this inning was Jaden Torrado's triple, which cleared the bases, bringing in Nate Vandersea, Nick Duryea, and Mac Cady. Williams, however, showed their fighting spirit by retaking the lead in the bottom of the sixth, highlighted by
Anthony Lods' single that drove in two runs, tying the game at 9, before
Marcus Burrell's double brought
Ryan Nakajima home, pushing Williams ahead.Â
But Skidmore had the final say, adding two runs in the eighth and securing their victory with a five-run rally in the ninth inning, sealing the 16-12 win.
Williams head coach
Bill Barrale said, "We got off to a great start, but down the line they made plays when we didn't. We gave up way too many free bases. Now we have to learn from it and prepare for another tough opponent tomorrow." Williams will suit up against Union College tomorrow at 4pm in Schnectasy, NY.
