Ephs Defeat Trinity and Claim NESCAC Championship

Scores:

Williams 3, Trinity 0

Location: Medford, MA

Records: Williams 23-11; Trinity 24-15

The Short Story:

Today, the Ephs defeated the Trinity Bantams in the NESCAC final to claim their eighth NESCAC Championship title in program history, the second most in conference history.  The Ephs' defense was on lockdown, keeping the Bantams scoreless. Sadie Leonard pitched a shutout, striking out eleven Bantams batters. On offense, first year Justine Dunaway had a standout performance hitting her fifth home run of the season, driving in herself and Sidney Miller. Dunaway also played a crucial role in initiating the first run of the game, when her single set Sydney Fleming up for a scoring opportunity, enabling Fleming to score on an RBI single by Katie Blanch

The Ephs win allowed them to secure an automatic bid into the NCAA tournament. The selection show for the NCAA tournament will air Monday, May 13 at 11 a.m. ET on NCAA.com.

Coach's Take:

The win today marks head coach Kris Herman's eighth NESCAC Championship with the team: "Sadie was great again today and our offense battled. It was a great softball game. The NESCAC is such a strong conference and it's an honor to be champions."

How it Happened:

  • Sadie Leonard pitched an excellent game shutting out the Bantams offense. Leonard struck out eleven batters and allowed only three hits and two walks

  • In the bottom of the fourth inning, Sydney Fleming crossed the plate for the first run of the game. After singling to left field, Fleming advanced to third on a single by Justine Dunaway and scored on a RBI single by Katie Blanch to left field.

  • Justine Dunaway extended the Ephs' lead with a two-run homer. Dunaway's blast over the left field fence allowed Sidney Miller, who had singled earlier, to score.
