Saratoga Springs, NY- A small but mighty Eph contingent raced today at the RPI classic, showing the team's characteristic prowess in racing smart even when in smaller numbers. The team finished second in the 5k race, led by junior Kate Swann. Swann placed fourth overall, running an impressive time of 18:29. Sophomore Helen Hurden was close behind, running a time of 18:33 and scoring fifth overall. Teammates Hayley Ballard (18:43), Nora Johnson (18:45), and Fiona Picone (18:52) rounded out William's top five for the day.
The scenic course in Saratoga Springs State Park traced a path along bubbling streams and rivers, over wooden bridges, and in and out of the trees, which were just beginning to turn to vibrant reds and oranges in classic northeast style. The beautiful course as well as the palpable excitement in the air made for a very pleasant racewith sugar apple donuts at the finish line.
"It was a really enjoyable course today", commented sophomore Julia Brennan, "and I thought the team did a really good job running together and packing up throughout the race". Brennan hit a substantial 5k personal record in today's race.
"I was really impressed with our team's effort and energy today'" Eph head coach Dusty Lopez noted. "Along with that people ran a smart race and sat back a little from a fast early pace, then closed really well to get five across the line before any other team. It was an excellent day from our group".
The women of William's Cross Country will race again on October 5th at the James Earley meet in Westfield, MA.
