Ephs Post Decisive Win Over Cortland State

Evarts recorded two wins today!
Williamsport, PA – This Sunday, the Ephs competed on the second day of the esteemed Budd Whitehill Duals. Participating in the 9th-12th place bracket, they competed in a four-team tournament. While they came up short against their first opponent, the Ohio Northern Bears, they ended the day strong with a victory over Cortland State, securing 3rd place in their group and finishing 11th overall. The Ephs fought hard over the past two days and have much to look forward to as they continue their 2024-25 campaign.

The Williams College wrestlers began the day at 9 a.m. against Ohio Northern. Christopher Colon opened the dual at 125 but lost in a closely contested 5-0 decision. Senior Jack Napeloni followed with a stellar performance, pinning his opponent just two minutes and 10 seconds into the match. However, victories by Ohio Northern's Brock Blankenhorn and Jacob Reed put Williams in a 9-point deficit after the first four matches. Junior captain Peter Kane turned the tide with a decisive pin against Jayden Jones, cutting the deficit to just 3 points. This win shifted the momentum back in favor of the Ephs.

Fisher Stites, Sean Tansey, and Jamie Evarts followed up with crucial wins, propelling Williams to a 24-15 lead. With just two matches remaining, Ohio Northern rallied and secured victories at 197 and 285, edging out the Ephs by 2 points in the final score. Despite the narrow loss, the Ephs delivered a thrilling dual that showcased top-level competition and drama until the very end.

After regrouping, Williams faced Cortland State in their second dual. The Ephs started with a 12-point advantage due to two vacant weight classes in the Cortland lineup. At 141, Tylor Stubbs delivered an electrifying performance with two powerful slams, earning a 17-9 victory. Williams dominated the rest of the dual, racking up an impressive 49 points. To cap off their outing at the Budd Whitehill Duals, Max Hall and Thomas Goodwin delivered standout performances. Hall pinned his opponent, Gavin Layman, early in the second period, while Goodwin secured a technical fall with a commanding 25-9 lead.

Eph head Coach Scott Honecker has clearly built a strong bond with his team and has high hopes for the season ahead. Reflecting on a hard-fought weekend, he shared: "This weekend was a stiff test. The level of competition combined with two days straight of wrestling will harden us for the battles to come. I love this team, and I'm excited to see how much better we can get during this intense stretch of the season."

In the end, the Ephs finished 11th overall at the Budd Whitehill Duals. They now head back to Williamstown to recover, reflect, and prepare for their next dual on Saturday against the Bridgewater State Bears. Stay tuned as this talented group of wrestlers looks to build on their impressive performances this season!
