WILLIAMSTIWN, MASS. -- The Williams Men's Squash Team completed a scintillating 5-4 win over Tufts. The #12 Ephs held off the #11 ranked Jumbos in front of an enraptured home crowd. Carried initially by stunning performances from seniors and captains
Andrew Minnis and
Jack Lee, juniors
Asher Leavy and
Alex Akbari, the contest was ultimately closed out by first year
Will Newton, who "detusked" his opponent in a thrilling four-game match beneath the gaze of the entire venue. "It's impossible to describe how difficult it is to close out a match like that as a first year," said co-captain
Andrew Minnis, "Newton went above and beyond with his performance and I'm so proud of him."
The Ephs initially went up 2-1 in the first round of matches, with Minnis and Leavy delivering two swift three-game victories. Rafay Syed, despite taking the first game, went down to his opponent in four. The second wave of players carried this momentum with Jack Lee displaying nerves of steel to claw back a game deficit to win convincingly in five. Alex Akbari followed suit with a confident dismantling of his opponent in three games. Freshman Ty Green lost in five.
In the final round of matches, Nick Agger and Himanshu Pannu were unable to close out their five-game matches in spite of valiant efforts. Ultimately, when everyone's eyes in The Simon Squash Center shifted onto Will Newton he delivered the coup de grace to the beleaguered Jumbos, etching his name into the now-ivory-clad walls of Court Three.
