NEW YORK - Juniors
Morgan Daetz and
Keely Campuzano of the Williams College volleyball team recorded 47 assists and 28 kills, respectively, in two matches Saturday afternoon, as the Ephs defeated NYU, 3-0, and fell short, 3-2, to Kean at the John A. Paulson Center.
"Overall we are really proud of our team for how it responded to the loss last night," said head coach
Christi Kelsey. "It was tough to lose to a very good Kean team in five, but how we played was a such a difference from the previous night. Then, the NYU match was just a complete match from start to finish. What also was great about today was we had different people step up and provide us with sparks in both matches when we needed it and it truly showed how many people can help us in each match. We are looking forward to three more non-conference matches and the annual New England Challenge next weekend."
Junior
Tatum Baker combined for 20 kills and 19 digs for the Ephs (15-4, 5-3 NESCAC), while first-year
Adalena Rodgers finished with 21 digs on the day. Sophomore
Chi Obi was a pivotal factor, tallying 15 kills in the two matches.
During the second match of the day, the Ephs took on the Violets (14-8, 3-2 UAA) and received 12 kills from Campuzano. Baker tallied her third double-double of the season with 11 digs and 10 kills, while Rodgers reached double figures in digs (13) for the fourth time in her last eight matches.
The Ephs trailed by a score of 20-19 late in the first set, but the unit showcased tremendous resilience, persevering, 26-24, on a game-clinching service ace by first-year
Eve Kaplan. Williams never trailed in the second set and took advantage of an attack error by NYU to secure a 25-21 victory. Once again in the third set, the unit stood tall in the face of adversity, as the Violets built a 16-13 advantage. The Ephs scored 12 of the final 16 points, earning a 25-20 triumph on a match-clinching kill by first-year
Sophia Baer.
During the Ephs' first match against the Cougars (18-5, 3-1 NJAC), Daetz and Campuzano led the group with 30 assists and 16 kills, respectively. Baker (10 kills, 8 digs), Kaplan (12 digs), Rodgers (8 digs, 7 kills) and Obi (10 kills) played well.
Kean earned a 25-17 first-set win on a kill by Ashley Torok. The Ephs won the next two sets, earning a 25-17 win in set two on an ace by Rodgers and a 25-20 victory in set three on an attack error by the Cougars. Kean evened the match at 2-2 with a 25-14 fourth-set triumph, setting the stage for the must-win fifth set for both teams.
An ace by sophomore
Maya Thompson gave the Ephs a 6-3 lead. Twice down the stretch, Williams fought off match point with kills by Campuzano, but a kill by Bella Stem clinched the match and a 17-15 victory for the Cougars.
The Ephs will be back in action Friday (7 p.m.) at Springfield during the New England Challenge.
