MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - The Williams College women's ice hockey team came back from a short Thanksgiving break to a game at Wesleyan University, earning a tie on the road against its Little Three rival before the hosts captured a win in the shootout.
Four goals were scored in an action-packed second period, with the Ephs jumping out to a two-goal lead before the Cardinals came back, eventually scoring the tying goal on the power play.
Despite more pressure from Williams in the final period, the Cardinals managed to keep the Ephs from scoring again in the third period. Both teams had chances in the first overtime, but neither broke through to earn a win. In the shootout, Wesleyan made a pair of attempts and Williams was unable to convert on its two shots.
The Ephs outshot Wesleyan 10-8 in the first period, and scored the game's first goal 13:35 into the second period when Zoe Rosenberg got her second of the season, with assists from Charlotte Fetherston and Reese Luber. Williams scored again less than two minutes later, this time with Keira Harder scoring off assists from Becca White and Savana Littlewood. The goal was the first of the junior's career.
Wesleyan got a goal back just nine seconds after Williams' second to cut the lead in half, and the Cardinals tied the game with 2:18 left in the second.Â
Despite Williams' offensive dominance - the Ephs outshot Wesleyan 41-30 on the day - the Cardinals kept the net clean for the rest of open play. Erin Pye made 28 saves in net for the Ephs.
The game was technically a non-conference matchup, as the teams will meet again for two games at Lansing Chapman Rink in Williamstown in early January that will count in the NESCAC standings. The Ephs will play again tomorrow, visiting Keene State for a 4pm matchup.
