WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - Seven Ephs recorded at least one point for the Williams College men's ice hockey team Sunday afternoon during a 7-3 setback to No. 9-ranked SUNY Geneseo in Lansing Chapman Rink.
First-years
Jackson Krill and
Simon Gaul posted their first collegiate goal and assist, respectively, for the Ephs (2-4-0, 2-2-0 NESCAC). Sophomore goaltender
Kael DePape tied a career-high 36 saves.
The Knights (6-3-1, 3-1-0 United Collegiate Hockey Conference) received strong performances by Sean Melso (2 goals, 3 assists), Dakota Zarudny (1 goal, 2 assists) and Filip Wiberg (1 goal, 2 assists). Geneseo was outstanding on the power play, finishing 5 of 10 in the game.
Geneseo raced out to a 4-0 lead in the first period, but Williams responded with back-to-back goals. With just over four minutes remaining in the second period, senior
Jared Lambright made a tremendous pass from the Ephs' defensive zone to sophomore
Jake McManus in the neutral zone. McManus found junior
Brady Welsch, who made a pass from behind the net onto the stick of Krill and he buried a shot from the left edge of the crease.
Williams trimmed the deficit down to 4-2 1:26 into the third period on a power-play tally by first-year
Gates Omicioli, as he one-timed a pass by sophomore
Grant Fuchsen from the left faceoff circle into the back of the net. The Knights scored the next two goals to push the lead up to four.
The Ephs cut the advantage down to 6-3, as senior
Conner Fitzpatrick buried a shot from a difficult angle deep in the zone on the right attacking side with 7:59 on the clock. With 2:55 left, Melso tallied a 5-on-3, power-play goal for the visitors to end the scoring.
The Ephs will return to NESCAC competition Friday with a 7 p.m. matchup against Hamilton at Lansing Chapman Rink.
