Williams College Wins 6-5 Over Norwich University in Extra Innings After Clutch Homer by Henry Juan Ties the Game in the Bottom of the 9th Inning

Williamstown, MA - The Williams College Baseball team won their home opener today against Norwich University in an electric come-from-behind victory.

The game started out slow for the Ephs, going down one run to the Norwich Cadets in the top of 1st when Norwich's Brock Carpenter earned a run, sliding into  home off of an RBI single by Ryan Miller. The Ephs went down 2 - 0 just an inning later after Jack Medhurst stole third on a questionable call and then scored off an RBI single to left field by Dillian Garza.

After the slow start, Ephs Jake Jeffries came in relief at the top of the third. Despite hitting one batter with the bases loaded, Jeffries, in his four innings, allowed no more runs and only one hit, giving Ephs the chance to quickly get back into the ball game.

Offensively, the Ephs got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth. With runners Owen McHugh and Ryan Nakajima on second and third, respectively, Dave Mosrie hit a ground ball to second base, allowing Nakajima to score easily. After waiting for the opportune moment, Owen McHugh scored, taking home after the call at first base, making a high IQ play to make the score 3-2.

Defensively, Williams continued to hold up, not allowing any runs through the next four innings. With first-year Nate Rosner and Senior Jacob Martin coming on in relief of Jeffries. As well, Eph's first baseman, senior James O'Connor, showed off his athleticism pulling out the splits to make the play, closing out the top of the 6th inning.

Heading into the 9th inning, the Cadets came out firing, with Dillan Garza earning one run and Geffen Franus scoring another off of a sacrifice fly by Kevin Ohelsen. This put the Ephs in a tough situation, down 5-2, going into the bottom of the 9th.

With two outs and the game looking like it was coming to an end, senior catcher Henry Juan stepped up to the plate with runners Brendan Stannard and Ben Swank on first and second, respectively. With the game on the line, Juan drilled a homer over the left-field fence to force extra innings.

Heading into the 10th inning, Williams nearly gave up an early run off a triple by Norwich's Michael Sabasteanski. However, Junior pitcher Luca Lopertone remained calm, striking out the next hitter and not allowing any runs in the 10th inning.

In the bottom of the 10th, after a double by Will Scott and a single bunt by Nakajima. The Cadets elected to walk the next hitter, Owen McHugh, putting the Ephs in scoring position. With bases loaded, the first year Ben Swank stepped up to the plate. Swank smashed a line drive off the pitcher, allowing Scott to score and secure the game for the Ephs, making the final score 6-5.

After the game, Eph head coach Bill Barrale was proud of his team for not backing down for a second, saying, "We were down five to two and never gave up." After hitting the crucial homer, Senior Henry Juan was proud to come through for his guys in the close game, saying, "It felt really good to come through for the team like that.

This game moves the Ephs to 1-1 on the season. Williams looks to build on this momentum tomorrow at 1 p.m. against Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts.
