Baseball Loses a Heartbreaker to Brandeis in the 9th Inning

Waltham, MA - The Williams College baseball team lost a very close game on the road to Brandeis University by a score of 6-5.

The Ephs started the game in a commanding fashion. The game's first run was scored by senior James O'Connor off of a sacrifice fly by sophomore Ryan Nakajima. This was followed by two more runs in the top of the third when O'Connor hit a double to center field, allowing sophomore Will Scott and senior Henry Juan to score, putting the Ephs up 3-0 early.

Defensively, Williams gave up nothing to begin the game, primarily due to the phenomenal pitching of sophomore Owen McHugh. McHugh did not allow any runs in his four innings and struck out six hitters, keeping Brandeis at bay during his entire time on the mound.

The Ephs continued their attack in the top of the fifth when Nakajima hit a double to left field, sending O'Connor and Scott home to advance their lead to 5-0. Brandeis quickly responded that inning, getting on the scoreboard off of a double by Danny Tambasica, allowing Bobby Quill and Connor Crowley to score.

In the top of the 7th, Ephs left the bases loaded, unable to get a hit with runners in scoring position. This allowed Brandeis to close in on the Ephs again in the bottom of the 7th after another big hit by Tambasica to center field, which he turned into a triple, and it sent Eddie Zanor home, making the score 5-3 going into the 8th inning.

In the bottom of the 9th, Brandeis completed the comeback, earning three runs. Starting with a clutch RBI single to second base by Jake Freed, sending Tambasica and Zanor home to tie the game at 5-5. After two more at-bats, Brandies secured the victory with a single-to-center field by Danny Walsh, who sent Freed home. This game moves the Ephs to 1-2 on the season.

This was a disappointing loss for the Ephs just a day after completing their own come-from-behind victory at home versus Norwich University. Unfortunately, they were on the wrong side of the comeback this time around. Eph head coach Bill Barralle noted the team failed to get hits when they had runners in scoring position, saying, "We left too many guys on base."  However, he also commented that the team is at an early stage in the season, and he is excited to see how they grow in their next game and during their trip to Florida. Sophomore pitcher Owen McHugh shared a similar sentiment, saying, "I think this is a good opportunity for us to learn when we're up early, we have to keep our foot on the gas and put teams away."

Ephs looks to bounce back this Wednesday at 4 p.m. on the road against Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh, New York.
