Williams Surges to an 11-5 Victory at No. 15 Trinity

HARTFORD, CT -- Women's lacrosse shook off an early deficit to cruise to an 11-5 win over No. 15 Trinity Bantams. Williams played impeccable defense to hold Trinity to just two goals over the final three quarters, en route to winning its first NESCAC game of the season. With the win, Williams improves to 2-3 overall and 1-2 in NESCAC play, while the loss drops Trinity to 3-3 overall and 1-2 in the NESCAC.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Claudia Russell opened the scoring with a free-position goal to make it 1-0, Williams, with 11:31 to go in the first quarter.

  • Trinity quickly punched back. Kelly Restivo finished around two Eph defenders to make it 1-1 just 42 seconds later, then Brooke Kurtz found Ivy Armentrout inside to give the Bantams a 2-1 lead with 10:04 to play in the first quarter.

  • Trinity added to its lead after a six-minute goalless drought, as Kurtz assisted a cutting Alex Lesko, who fired into the left side with 3:37 to play in the quarter.

  • Russell cleared the ball downfield and dumped it off low to Anna Miller, who deposited the goal to cut the lead to 3-2 with 2:59 remaining in the quarter.

  • The Ephs tied the score with 10:19 to go in the second quarter, as Miller scored her second goal of the game on a pass from Grace Rebak.

  • Williams put up two quickfire goals midway through the second quarter. Russell converted on a free-position shot, then Katy McCullough scored on a smooth pass from Cece Tauber just under a minute later to make it 5-3 with 6:13 to go in the half.

  • Restivo pulled the Bantams within one towards the end of the half, making a nice spin move and firing low for a goal with 2:49 to go.

  • The Ephs finished the half with a flourish. First, a nice play on a free-position attempt saw McCullough fire a quick goal into the top of the net. Russell. Then, Russell scored her third goal of the game on another free-position shot to make it 7-4 with a minute to play in the half.

  • Williams scored first in the second half, as Tauber found herself wide open on the right side and flipped it into the top right corner to add to the lead with 13:42 to go in the third quarter.

  • After over nine scoreless minutes, Juliet Kilborn found Tauber behind the net, who fired in a wraparound goal to put the Ephs ahead 9-4 with 4:04 remaining in the third quarter.

  • The Ephs continued to pad their advantage in the fourth quarter. Reece Willison drove inside and assisted Sasha Landau on a goal with 12:48 remaining in the game. 

  • Franny Donohue tacked on a final Eph goal, drawing a foul on a nice clearance and netting a low free-position shot to make it 11-4 with 2:35 to play.

  • Trinity netted a last-minute goal on a free-position shot from Caroline Lally with 29 seconds to play, putting the final touches on an 11-5 scoreline.

NOTES

  • Caroline Pratt made a number of critical saves throughout the game, finishing with nine overall.

  • Williams out-shot Trinity 21-15 and also finished with seven assists compared to Trinity's two.

  • The Ephs defense held the Bantams to their lowest scoring output of the season.

The Ephs now will head to California for some games over Spring Break. The team will next compete against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges at 10 p.m ET on Monday, March 24.
