Second Split in Two Days for the Ephs in California

Scores:

Williams 3, Chapman 2 (8 innings)

Chapman 3, Williams 0

Location:  Orange, CA

Records: Williams 7-3; Chapman 14-3

The Short Story:

The Ephs battled with the Chapman University Panthers in a Wednesday morning doubleheader in Orange, CA and came away with a split of the two games.  Williams battled from behind in the first game, scoring two in the top of the 8th to seal the win.  Chapman answered in the nightcap, shutting out the Ephs 3-0.  The Panthers took advantage of some defensive mistakes by the Purple, and Jillian Kelley shut the Ephs bats down, allowing just two hits.  The pitching was strong for both teams all day.  Sadie Leonard '26 remains undefeated at 5-0.

Coach's Take:

"Today was not a great day for the Ephs in terms of results.  We made some mistakes in the field that don't show up in the box score but certainly did hurt us on the scoreboard.  Both yesterday and today our defense was suspect at times and today we were not able to make up for it with timely hitting.  Our entire team is working hard and we are excited for the second half of our trip," said Eph head coach Kris Hermam

Game 1

How it Happened

  • The contest was scoreless through four and a half innings as Chapman strung three hits together to score just one in the bottom of the fifth.

  • The Ephs answered in the top of the sixth as Dani Jackman '28 lead off with a double and came around to score on a scrappy single by Aprill Medrano '28.

  • In the tiebreaker eighth inning Williams was able to plate two runs on hits by Alysa DeQuiroz '26 and Sydney Fleming '25 and a hard hit fielders choice off the bat of Katie Blanch '27

  • Sadie Leonard struck out thirteen in the contest, including all three batters in the bottom of the 8th.

  • Seniors Kayla Chang and Sydney Fleming had two hits each.

Game 2

How it Happened

  • The Ephs could only muster two hits, one each by Kayla Chang and Lauren Davis.

  • Shaky defense and just one hard hit ball led to three runs for the Panthers in the 4th and that was all they needed.

  • Katie Blanch '27 walked no one and struck out five on the day, scattering six hits on just sixty-seven pitches.
