Wellesley, Mass. - The Williams College Women's Golf team went 3-0-1 in match play at the two-day Ann S. Batchelder Championship hosted by Wellesley College this weekend.
The tournament was formatted so that each school's five competing players faced off against their opponents to win each hole, attempting to win the most holes in the round. Each player could win a point for their team in the matchup against each school.
In Day 1 action, the Ephs tied Middlebury (2.5-2.5) before beating Bowdoin 3.5-1.5, and on Day 2, Williams was in control, with a 5-0 win over the hosts and a 4-1 win over Amherst. The three team wins and one tie was best for any school, with Bowdoin finishing second with three wins and a loss.
Euna Lee and Natalie Cheong both went undefeated over the course of the weekend, each with three wins and a tie in their matches. Michelle Ding and Zoe Wynn both had three wins and one loss, Emma Abramson had a pair of wins across her matches.
"We had a slow start to our matches yesterday, but I was proud of the team to go undefeated in the four team matches," said Head Coach Tomas Adalsteinsson. "Our players got increasingly more comfortable with the course, and it was particularly impressive to see them win 9 of the 10 individual matches on Sunday. Strong start to the season and now we get ready to compete in Middlebury next weekend!"
This was the first time that Williams had competed in the Batchelder Championship since 2019, when the team won in comfortable fashion in a tournament with traditional scoring, compared to this year's match play format.Â
The Ephs will travel to Middlebury next weekend for the George Phinney Classic before hosting the Williams Invite on September 27-28 at Taconic Golf Club.
