Bethencourt and Mitchell break through in 2-0 win over Union

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - Alex Bethencourt broke the deadlock midway through the second half and Lorcan Mitchell iced the game with under two minutes left, as Williams earned a 2-0 non-conference victory over Union on Tuesday afternoon at Cole Field.

The Ephs had dominated the game until the first goal, outshooting the visitors, 15-4, in the first half and putting three shots on goal in the early minutes of the second.

The Williams' pressure finally paid off on a long throw by Henry Kirkman that was flicked to an open Bethencourt at the far post by Ben Brown. The sophomore hit a hard low shot past the goalkeeper toward the far post for the game-winner.

Union had its best stretch in the 20 minutes following the opening goal and forced sophomore goalkeeper Kai Darrell into two saves in three minutes after Bethencourt's strike, but Williams held firm.

The hosts got a second goal to put the game away with 1:21 left on the clock when the Ephs' pressure forced a turnover deep in their attacking third, and Mitchell dribbled past a defender before being fouled from behind. He stepped up to take the penalty and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way, finishing low to the goalkeeper's right.

The goals for Bethencourt and Mitchell were the first of the season for each, who were the two leading scorers on the team a year ago. Mitchell finished with eight goals in 2024 and Bethencourt had five.

Darrell earned his first shutout of the season, making seven saves as the Ephs' defense headlined by another strong performance from first-year central defender Zach Greer, kept a clean sheet for the third straight game.

The Ephs will be back in action again on Cole Field this Saturday, hosting Trinity in NESCAC action with kickoff set for noon.
