No. 5 Field Hockey posts 4-0 win over Colby

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - Senior captain Pilar Torres scored twice, including the game-winning goal, and junior Claire Colvin recorded one goal and two assists Saturday, as the No. 5-ranked Williams College field hockey team defeated Colby, 4-0, on Williamson Field.

Sophomore goalkeeper Ellie Smith made three saves, posting her fourth shutout of the season for the Ephs (6-1, 4-0 NESCAC), while sophomore Ali Meyer posted her first collegiate point with an assist during the third quarter. Williams has won eight consecutive games against the Mules (2-5, 0-4 NESCAC) dating back to the 2017 season.

"It took us a while to get going, but we found our groove halfway through the second quarter," said head coach Alix Barrale. "Pilar was red hot at both ends. Her goals gave us the momentum we needed down the stretch. Colby is a well-coached and athletic team, which kept us on our toes for four quarters."

Williams opened the scoring 55 seconds into the second quarter off a penalty corner by Colvin. The ball found its way to first-year Katie Sigrist, who ripped a shot on net that was saved. Colvin fought for the ball and was able to slide a pass over to Torres on the right side of the circle, and then the Madison, New Jersey, native buried a shot into the bottom right corner.

The hosts extended the advantage to 2-0 with 55 seconds remaining in the first half, as Torres delivered again. Colvin orchestrated the goal with a penalty corner from the left attacking side, and then screened the goalkeeper on a shot from distance by Torres, which rolled into the bottom left corner.

The Ephs added some more breathing room in the third quarter, as Meyer dribble into the right side of the circle, and then slid a pass in front of the net. Colvin asserted herself in the middle of the action and buried a shot into the bottom right side of the goal. Junior Haley McAuslin ended the scoring during the 46th minute with a highlight-reel goal. The play began with an outstanding lead pass by senior captain Kiki Higgins down the left attacking side, and then McAuslin backhanded a shot into the air and snuck it right between the goalkeeper and post.

Sigrist finished with a game-high five shots, while Torres and Colvin combined for six shots on goal. The Ephs held a 16-5 lead in shots and a 10-3 advantage in shots on goal. Williams led in penalty corners, 6-2.

The Ephs will compete against No. 13 Bowdoin Sunday at 1 p.m. on Williamson Field.
