No. 13 Women's Soccer outlasts Bowdoin, 2-1, at Cole Field

Box Score
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - First-year Maya Lloyd and sophomore Elizabeth Stophel combined for one goal and three assists, as the student-athletes factored into both goals for the No. 13-ranked Williams College women's soccer team during a 2-1 triumph over Bowdoin Sunday afternoon on Cole Field.

"I am very happy with our first-half performance, which set us up for the win," said head coach Sarah Raymond. "I am disappointed with what we showed in the second half. We let them back in the game and despite senior goalkeeper Margaret Huelin's best efforts to keep us with the clean sheet, I do not think the rest of the team helped in particularly good ways with that. Overall I am happy on coming out of the weekend with four points, but there is so much growth for us to learn how to be comfortable seeing games out and being in the lead."

The Ephs (5-1-2, 4-1-1 NESCAC) defeated the Polar Bears (4-3-0, 1-3-0 NESCAC) for the second consecutive season, as Williams emerged victorious at Bowdoin, 1-0, on Sept. 29, 2024.

During the 19th minute, first-year Lucy Carrel buried the opening tally for the Ephs. Stophel created the play, eluding a defender on the right edge of the 18-yard box, and then sending a pass to Lloyd, who was being closely marked in the box. Lloyd one-touched a pass over to Carrel, and then the Bellevue, Washington, native one-timed a shot just in front of a diving goalkeeper into the bottom left corner of the net.

Williams extended its lead to 2-0 in the 26th minute, as sophomore Elle Long got the sequence rolling with a tremendous through ball down the right attacking side. Stophel caught up with the ball on the side of the box and snuck past a defender near the end line, and then slid a pass to Lloyd, who one-timed a shot into the bottom left side of the net for the game-winning tally.

Senior Stephanie Christianson placed a penalty kick into the goal during the 86th minute for Bowdoin.

Huelin earned the win in net, making three saves, as she improved to 5-1-2 on the season. Long posted a game-high four shots, while senior captain Ansley Burns contributed with three. Williams led in total shots, 16-12, and shots on goal, 9-4, while the Ephs took seven corner kicks and the Polar Bears attempted six.

The Ephs will be back in action on Saturday at 11 a.m. against Bates in Lewiston, Maine.
