Game Recap: Field Hockey |

No. 4 Field Hockey outlasts No. 2 Tufts, 3-1

MEDFORD, Mass. - Senior captain Kiki Higgins scored twice and junior Claire Colvin found the back of the net once for the No. 4-ranked Williams College field hockey team Saturday, as the Ephs defeated No. 2 Tufts, 3-1, on Ounjian Field during the NESCAC opener for both teams.

During the first quarter, sophomore goalkeeper Ellie Smith made an outstanding kick save for the Ephs (2-0, 1-0 NESCAC) 1:38 into the game on a shot from the edge of the circle by Hannah Biccard, keeping the game scoreless. The Ephs capitalized midway through the opening period off a penalty corner, as Colvin played the ball into Higgins at the top of the circle. Higgins navigated a pass to senior captain Pilar Torres on the left attacking side of the circle, and then the Madison, New Jersey, native ripped a shot with a great deal of velocity that was redirected into the cage from point-blank range by Colvin.

Tufts (1-1, 0-1 NESCAC) responded with the equalizer on a goal by Sophie Brants, assisted by Hannah Murray with 6:09 remaining in the first half. Higgins played both sides of the ball tremendously well at the end of the third quarter, as she picked up a steal in the attacking zone. The Weston, Massachusetts, native then buried the game-winning goal from a difficult angle on the right attacking side near the end line. Sophomore Sienna Alday picked up her first collegiate point with an assist on a smooth give-and-go exchange with Higgins.

The visitors established some breathing room late in the fourth quarter, as Williams converted on a penalty corner for the second time. Colvin played the ball into the circle, and then Higgins passed to first-year Katie Sigrist, who rang a shot off the post. Higgins aggressively went into the thick of the defense and converted the rebound to give the Ephs a two-goal cushion with 11:28 left in regulation.

The Ephs held a 16-10 advantage in total shots, to go along with an 8-5 lead in shots on goal. Smith made a trio of saves in the victory, as Williams defeated Tufts in the regular season for the second consecutive year.

The Ephs will be back in action against No. 7 Babson Sunday at 1 p.m. on MacDowell Field.
