NORTH ADAMS, Mass. - The Williams College men's hockey team dominated Tuesday evening's matchup against the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts but ran into an outstanding goaltending performance in a 3-3 tie on the road.
However, the Ephs got the only goal in the shootout to take a win, as Conner Fitzpatrick scored on the team's first shot and Harrison Fogel made three saves in net.
The Ephs outshot their neighbors 66-17 over the course of 65 minutes of play, but neither team could hold onto an advantage in an exciting game.
After a scoreless first period, Williams was first to break through when first-year Wilson Farrow scored the first goal of his career at the 1:58 mark, skating in on goal and finishing from close range during a 4-on-4.Â
MCLA struck back against the run of play a minute later, and took a 2-1 lead at the 12:31 mark. The Ephs entered the third period down a goal, but immediately tied it up, getting the tying goal just 22 seconds in after possessing the puck and keeping it in the zone off the opening faceoff. Junior Brady Welsch, the team's leading-scorer with eight goals on the season, tucked a backhanded shot past the goalie to make it 2-2.
The Ephs then took the lead at the 2:32 mark, keeping pressure in the MCLA zone and squeezing in a screened shot from Jared Lambright to go up 3-2. The hosts were able to tie the game at the 8:15 mark, and despite constant pressure from the Ephs, the game went to overtime.
Williams outshot the Trailblazers 8-0 in overtime but MCLA goalie Rocco Stolz was up to the task, stopping each shot. Over the course of the game, Stolz made 63 saves to help his team get to the shootout.
The Ephs will be back in action at home this weekend, first hosting Middlebury College in NESCAC action on Saturday at 3pm, followed by a non-conference matchup against Anna Maria College on Sunday at 3pm, both games at Lansing Chapman Rink.
