WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - Sophomore forward
Jake McManus finished with two goals and one assist for the Williams College men's ice hockey team Sunday afternoon, as the Ephs outlasted Anna Maria, 5-2, at Lansing Chapman Rink.
The Ephs (4-9-2, 3-6-0 NESCAC) also received multi-point efforts from first-years
Wilson Farrow (2 assists),
Jackson Krill (2 assists) and
Ryan Kearney (1 goal, 1 assist). Junior goaltender
Harrison Fogel earned his first collegiate victory and stopped 31 shots, including making a highlight-reel stop on a breakaway attempt with 6:24 left in the second period. Goaltender Matthew Hennessey made 40 saves for Anna Maria (9-5-1, 4-1-0 MASCAC).
Williams opened the scoring with 1:22 remaining in the first period. Krill skated across the offensive zone and located Farrow in the right faceoff circle, and then senior captain
David Vieten redirected a pass from Farrow into the back of the net from the edge of the crease. The Ephs extended their lead 1:51 into the second, as junior
Logan Valkama stole the puck on an attempted clear by Anna Maria. The puck found its way onto the stick of Kearney, who slid a pass over to senior
Conner Fitzpatrick for a one-timer in the slot.
During a breakaway midway through the second, Krill forced the goaltender to commit, and then slid a pass over to McManus, who one-timed a shot into the left side of the net with 9:04 on the scoreboard. Owen Barrow scored 1:27 into the third for Anna Maria, trimming the hosts' lead to 3-1, and then Kearney responded, burying a one-time shot into the top right corner of the net from the right faceoff circle off a behind-the-net pass by McManus. Braeden McKinnon scored for the visitors on a breakaway opportunity with 7:02 left in the third, pulling Anna Maria to within two at 4-2. McManus ended the scoring on an empty-net tally with just over one second remaining.
The Ephs held a 45-33 advantage in shots and won 44-of-66 faceoffs. McManus went 17-6 in the faceoff circle, while Vieten posted a 12-4 effort. McManus led all student-athletes with nine shots, while sophomore
Grant Fuchsen and Farrow were plus three.
The Ephs will host Colby Friday at 7 p.m. in Lansing Chapman Rink.
