WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - The Williams College wrestling team hosted the Williams Open on Saturday in Lasell Gymnasium, featuring four mats with over a hundred wrestlers representing a dozen schools.
The Ephs came away with victories in five weight classes: Jake Strianese at 133, Hayden Haber at 149, Peter Kane at 157, Fisher Stites at 165, Gage Wiggins at 174, and Jamie Evarts at 184.
First-year Strianese cruised through his bracket, earning two tech falls and a major decision in his first three matches before taking a forfeit victory in the final. At 149, fellow first-year Haber was the busiest of the Ephs, needing to win five matches to capture his class, which he did via four decisions and a technical fall.
Another first-year, Wiggins, topped his teammate Henry Forte via fall in the final at 174, following a trio of earlier victories against tough competition. Sophomore Stites had two major decisions, a technical fall, and a forfeit en route to winning his bracket at 165, and classmate Evarts earned three falls before capturing his class via major decision in the final at 184.
Senior captain Peter Kane again cut through his competition, winning his first three matches via quick pins before earning a major decision in the final.
A total of 14 Ephs were in competition on Saturday, with all earning at least one victory in a successful event at home. Williams will be back in action next weekend at the Budd Whitehill Duals in Williamsport, Penn., and have just one remaining home event this season, a dual meet against Castleton on Friday, February 13.
