MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - The Williams College women's basketball team earned a 67-61 road win at Wesleyan University on Friday night in the NESCAC opener for both teams.
First-year Amaya Chase-Luthra led the Ephs with 16 points, just ahead of junior Hanorah Murphy with 15, and sophomore Micah Walton had 12 points, eight rebounds, five assists and three steals and played all 40 minutes in the win.
The game was back-and-forth for the entire first half, as Williams took small leads but the Cardinals kept battling back, and the Ephs entered halftime with a narrow two-point lead.
In the third quarter, the Ephs were able to take a bigger lead, as Murphy scored eight of her points in the session, and Williams entered the fourth up 11 at 56-45.
The Cardinals fought back in the fourth, and pulled back to within four points with just 24 seconds remaining, but Walton hit four free throws in the final seconds to ice the game.
Williams used strong defense throughout to keep Wesleyan at bay, with the team recording 14 steals, including four from Skylar Chui.
The win was a fifth straight for Williams over Wesleyan, including a matchup in November that did not count in the NESCAC standings. League play opened this weekend, and the Ephs will be on the road again on Saturday when they visit #18 Trinity College with tip-off at 3pm.
