WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The No. 11-ranked Williams College men's soccer team received goals from three different student-athletes and junior forward
Alex Bethencourt posted two assists, as the Ephs defeated Wheaton, 3-2, in non-conference action Saturday afternoon on Cole Field.
"Congratulations to the guys on a fantastic performance, which was rewarded with some great team goals against last year's Elite Eight team," said sixth-year head coach
Steffen Siebert. "It is time to rest up before our next NESCAC matchup."
The Ephs (9-1-1, 5-1-1 NESCAC) opened the scoring during the 14th minute, as junior goalkeeper
Kai Darrell played a long ball from the top of the Ephs' 18-yard box into the attacking zone. Bethencourt rose up and won a header to junior midfielder
Luca Ruta, who then buried a left-footed attempt from beyond the box into the right side of the net.
The second scoring sequence for Williams began with an outstanding sliding tackle by sophomore defender
Jake Farmer near the midfield line. First-year midfielder
Nick Appleton played a ball that was tipped by sophomore midfielder
Kai Desmangles, and then junior forward
Lorcan Mitchell one-timed a shot into the top right corner to give the Ephs a 2-0 advantage with 14:35 left in the first half. Desmangles recorded his first collegiate assist on the play.
Senior midfielder
Spencer Mix delivered his first game-winning goal of the season 24 seconds into the second half, as he one-timed a lead pass by sophomore forward
JJ Ruehlemann into the back of the net from the top of the box.
The Lyons (6-2-4, 1-1-1 NEWMAC)Â refused to go quietly, as Ben Kane tipped a free kick by Declan Rhatigan into the goal during the 83rd minute. With 3:04 on the scoreboard, Avery Dinham netted a left-footed shot into the right side of the net off a cross from the left attacking side by Austin Hoadley.
Wheaton held a 17-13 advantage in total shots, while each team put eight shots on target. Darrell earned the win in net with six saves, improving to 9-1-1 on the season. The Lyons attempted eight corner kicks and Williams was awarded two. Seven Ephs tallied at least one point in the victory.
