#5 Ephs Suffer 2-0 Loss at #8 Johns Hopkins

The Williams College field hockey team held an 18-11 lead in shots Sunday in Baltimore

BALTIMORE — The fifth-ranked Williams College field hockey team held an 18-11 advantage in total shots and an 11-7 lead in shots on goal Sunday afternoon, but No. 8 Johns Hopkins scored two second-half goals during a 2-0 setback for the Ephs at Homewood Field.

"It was a tough loss today," said 27th-year head coach Alix Barrale '93. "Johns Hopkins is a formidable opponent and made it hard for us to get in a rhythm. The goalkeeper robbed us of a couple goals with some brilliant saves. Even though we came up short, it was a great competitive game that will serve us well going into the final stretch of the season."

Williams (8-3, 4-2 NESCAC) led in total shots, 14-3, during the first half, including an 8-0 advantage in the second quarter. Midway through the first, the Ephs nearly found their way onto the scoreboard, as senior Claire Colvin carried into the circle and had her shot denied. Then, first-year Kayla Bohlin fired two shots in rapid succession of each other, but goalkeeper Aubrey Kilgore made three saves in the sequence for the Blue Jays (9-4, 4-1 Centennial Conference).

The Blue Jays almost struck with 4:09 left in the first, as Sarah Chilton's penalty-stroke opportunity rang the right post. Late in the second quarter, senior captain Tess Everett played a ball from the left attacking side, and then sophomore Sawyer Rowland redirected it into the circle. Senior Madeline Rowland fired a shot from the middle of the circle, but Kilgore came out aggressively and denied the attempt.

Ava Zimmerman scored the game-winning goal for the hosts in the 33rd minute, as she established position deep on the right side of the circle and tipped a pass by Sophia Albano into the bottom right corner of the goal. Sophia Builione ended the scoring for the Blue Jays with 9:26 on the scoreboard in the fourth, dribbling around the goalie and burying a shot.

Each team attempted eight penalty corners. Colvin led all student-athletes with four total shots and three on target. Kilgore made 10 saves in the first half for the Blue Jays. Williams and Johns Hopkins meet during the Final Four of the 2022 NCAA Division III Tournament.

The Ephs compete No. 12 Wesleyan Saturday at noon in Middletown, Connecticut.
