Game Recap: Field Hockey |

#7 Ephs Score Late in 1-0 Triumph at #13 Wesleyan

The Williams and Wesleyan field hockey teams have competed in nine straight one-goal games

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. — Junior McKenna Dwyer rose to the occasion Saturday afternoon, as the midfielder buried her first collegiate game-winning goal with 5:09 remaining in the fourth quarter for the seventh-ranked Williams College field hockey team during a thrilling 1-0 road victory against No. 13 and Little Three-rival Wesleyan on Hicks Field.

"We played in rhythm today," said 27th-year head coach Alix Barrale '93. "Our focus and energy was phenomenal. Ellie was amazing in goal, especially at the end when Wesleyan was making a push. There were many great minutes by many student-athletes. McKenna's goal was a superb finish."

First-year defender Hannah Herlihy played a free hit from just over the midfield line in the Ephs' attacking end, as the ball found its way onto the stick of senior captain Laura Ryan. Then, first-year Dakota Adams held possession on the left side of the circle and slid a pass into the thick of action. The ball went by a Wesleyan defender and landed on Dwyer's stick, and then the Basking Ridge, New Jersey, native flicked her fourth collegiate goal into the right side of the net.

Junior goalkeeper Ellie Smith made five saves on her way to earning her ninth win and fourth shutout of the season. She has compiled 33 victories and 17 shutouts in her outstanding collegiate career.

Williams (9-3, 5-2 NESCAC) led in total shots, 10-6, including a 5-0 advantage during the second quarter. The Ephs also held leads in penalty corners, 7-2, and shots on goal, 6-5. Herlihy led all student-athletes with four shots, while goalie Keira O'Flynn made five saves for Wesleyan (7-5, 3-5 NESCAC).

The Ephs and Cardinals have established a rivalry, as the programs have competed in nine consecutive one-goal games dating back to the 2021 season. The Ephs defeated the Cardinals 13 straight times from 2013-24, but the Cardinals won both meetings during the 2025 season.

Williams knocked out Wesleyan in the quarterfinals of the NESCAC Tournament in 2023, and then the Cardinals avenged the loss in the quarterfinals of the conference playoffs during the 2025 season. The Ephs defeated the Cardinals, 3-2, on Williamson Field during the second round of the 2024 NCAA Division III Tournament.

The Ephs compete against No. 5 Hamilton Tuesday at 5 p.m. on Williamson Field.
