WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Junior
Lily Mark recorded one goal and two assists and sophomore
Maya Lloyd scored twice for the 12th-ranked Williams College women's soccer team during a 5-0 non-conference triumph against Cortland Sunday on Cole Field.
"I am excited about the intention and confidence we showed up with today from the first whistle," said seventh-year head coach
Sarah Raymond. "It is the best I have ever seen us start a game. We could see all of the components that we focused on up until this point on display. Student-athletes were scanning, making great decisions, using their technical skill in appropriate moments and combining with each other in great ways to create excellent scoring opportunities."
During the ninth minute, Cortland sent out a goal kick and Mark did an exceptional job winning the ball and sending a pass to Lloyd in the open field. Lloyd was able to carry into the 18-yard box with a defender marking her, and then flicked a shot pass the goalkeeper, who aggressively came out of the net.
Williams doubled its lead in the 14th minute, as Mohammed played a long ball from just beyond her own box onto the feet of Lloyd in the attacking zone. Lloyd went in 1-on-1 with the goalkeeper and dribbled around her before netting a sliding left-footed shot. Mohammed recorded her first assist as an Eph on the scoring sequence.
Senior captain
Bria Abbiati won a 50-50 ball on the left edge of the box during the 24th minute, and then buried a right-footed shot into the bottom left corner of the goal for a 3-0 advantage. Williams took a 4-0 lead into halftime, as sophomore
Olivia Bevilacqua rang the crossbar with a shot from the top of the box, and then first-year
Lauren Rosenberg headed in her first collegiate goal on an attempted clear by Cortland with 5:31 remaining in the first half.
Mark ended the scoring for Williams in the 56th minute, as she scored her first goal of the season with a left-footed shot from beyond the right side of the box. Mohammed played the initial 64 minutes, 23 seconds and sophomore goalie
Tessa Chomsky competed in the final 25 minutes, 37 seconds, as the two combined for the shutout.
Williams led in total shots, 27-7, and held a 13-6 lead in shots on goal. The hosts attempted 11 corner kicks and did not relinquish a single one. Goalkeeper Olivia Rouse made eight saves for the Red Dragons (8-3-1, 4-0-0 SUNYAC).
"Cortland's goalkeeper was outstanding,"Â said Raymond. "She is one of the best that we have seen so far and it took good goals to beat her. It was an incredible team win and throughout multiple player rotations, our playing identity was evident. That is what I am most excited about."
The Ephs compete against Farmingdale State Monday at 3 p.m. on Rams Field in Farmingdale, New York.
