WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Junior forward
Alex Bethencourt of the Williams College men's soccer team finished with one goal and one assist Saturday afternoon, as the Ephs defeated 14th-ranked Connecticut College, 2-1, for the first time since the 2013 season.
"It was a fantastic start to senior weekend with one of the best performances of the year by the team,"Â said sixth-year head coach
Steffen Siebert. "We looked very good on and off the ball all 90 minutes. It was a complete performance today by everyone. Now it is time to recover before we go again in less than 24 hours."
The last time the Ephs (7-1-1, 5-1-1 NESCAC) took down the Camels (5-2-1, 3-2-1 NESCAC) was a 1-0 decision on Sept. 28, 2013, at Cole Field. In between that result and today's game, Williams had gone 0-9-7 against Connecticut College.
During the 17th minute, sophomore forward
JJ Ruehlemann played an outstanding through ball from the midfield line. Senior midfielder
Kellan Grace received the pass, dribbled down the center of the attacking zone and located Bethencourt in stride on his way into the 18-yard box. Bethencourt did the rest, taking one touch and burying a shot into the bottom right corner of the goal.
Williams was not satisfied with the one-goal advantage, as the unit scored 11 seconds into the second half. The opening kickoff went back to junior goalkeeper
Kai Darrell and he played a long ball onto the edge of the 18-yard box in the Ephs' attacking zone. Ruehlemann executed a perfect give-and-go with Bethencourt, heading the game-winning tally into the back of the net.
Connecticut College trimmed the deficit down to 2-1 in the 81st minute, as Marco Perugini netted a right-footed shot from the edge of the box into the left side of the net. Darrell earned the win in net, making a career-high nine saves.
The Camels held a 15-8 advantage in total shots and a 10-5 lead in shots on target. Connecticut College attempted six corner kicks and the Williams was awarded a pair.
The Ephs compete in senior-day action Sunday against Keene State at 2 p.m. on Cole Field.
