WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The 18th-ranked Williams College women's soccer team shared the wealth effectively Saturday afternoon, as eight Ephs finished with at least one point during a 6-0 triumph against Connecticut College on Cole Field.
"I am proud of the way my team showed up today after a disappointing result the other night," said seventh-year head coach
Sarah Raymond. "It is the best I have seen us start a game with composure and patience to build dangerous attacks. It was awesome to see
Maya Lloyd put the first one in for us, and then
Bria Abbiati followed quickly to give us a comfortable lead."
Junior midfielder and defender
Greta Pew (3 assists), senior midfielder
Claire Tunney (2 goals) and Abbiati (1 goal, 1 assist) powered the Ephs (6-2-0, 6-1-0 NESCAC) to the victory over the Camels (3-5-1, 1-4-1 NESCAC). Goalkeeper
Chelsea Mohammed played the initial 71 minutes, 17 seconds and
Giovanna Calvo competed in the final 18 minutes, 43 seconds, as the two combined for the shutout.
During the 16th minute, Lloyd buried her 12th collegiate goal and seventh game-winning tally, as she received a throw-in from Pew, made a decisive move around a defender to her left and found the right side of the net. The Ephs doubled their lead in the 24th minute, as Abbiati one-timed a pass from junior forward
Elizabeth Stophel into the left side of the net from the edge of the 18-yard box.
"The starting group set the tone for us," said Raymond. "It was a great team win, with some superb goal contributions from Claire. Regardless of who was on in moments, I was proud of the way we stuck to our identity and every student-athlete contributed in great ways with doing that. I am excited to keep adding as we go through these next few weeks."
Pew played an outstanding cross from the right attacking side in the 28th minute, and then first-year midfielder and forward
Alli Aleman tipped the pass into the back of the goal at the right post for a 3-0 lead. The Ephs extended their lead to 4-0 during the 53rd minute, as Tunney scored her first collegiate goal, one-timing a cross from the left attacking side by Abbiati.
Pew made a run around a defender down the right attacking side, and then centered a pass into the box. Tunney received the ball and buried a turnaround shot into the bottom left corner in the 62nd minute, pushing the advantage up to 5-0. Sophomore midfielder
Ella Ryan ended the scoring with 21:47 left on the clock in the second half, tallying her first collegiate goal off a corner kick from the left attacking side by sophomore midfielder
Olivia Bevilacqua.
The Ephs led in total shots, 28-2, holding a 14-1 advantage in each half. The hosts also held a 14-1 advantage in shots on goal. Williams attempted 11 corner kicks and Connecticut College was awarded two. The Ephs have won three consecutive games over the Camels, outscoring Connecticut College by a combined margin of 12-0 in those contests.
The Ephs compete against Cortland on Sunday, Oct. 11, at 11 a.m. from Cole Field.
