Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Women’s lax comes up just short against #20 Trinity in season opener

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - The Williams College women's lacrosse team dropped a tight 11-8 result to #20 Trinity College on Saturday afternoon at Farley-Lamb Field on Saturday afternoon. The game was tied at the half but the Bantams were able to take a lead in the third quarter and hold on to secure the win.

Franny Donohue had three goals for the Ephs, leading the team, and Coco Norman added two goals and an assist. Charlotte Cote made four saves in goal in the first three quarters before first-year Savoy McMahon made her collegiate debut in goal in the fourth quarter.

Trinity started the match on the front foot, scoring the first four goals of the game before Donohue scored her first goal to pull the game back to 4-1 where the score stood at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter reversed the scoreline; after the Bantams went up 5-1 in a player-up situation, the Ephs rattled off four straight goals to tie the game at five. Norman got both her goals in the second, and the others came from Sydney Puntus and Ainsley Abel, whose goal with just 40 seconds remaining evened the score going into the half.

The Bantams were able to wrest control back in the third quarter, scoring the only four goals of the session, and carrying a 9-5 lead into the fourth quarter. With Cote forced to leave due to injury, McMahon and the Ephs defense battled in the final quarter, and came up with several big stops. Katy McCullough scored with 10:51 left to make the score 10-6, but Trinity used a player-up goal to restore a five goal lead with 5:41 remaining.

The Ephs put all their effort into making a late-game comeback, as Donohue scored a pair of goals to pull within three, but the visitors' defense held firm as Trinity ran out with the victory in the season and NESCAC debut for both teams.

Williams will have a week before playing its second game of the season, when the team travels to Colby College next Saturday, March 7, for an 11am start against the Mules.
