ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The Williams College baseball team earned its first win of the new season on Sunday afternoon in a home game against Brandeis University, hosted at Bard College in New York. The Ephs walked off winners, having scored once in the bottom of the 9th to tie the game, and again in the 10th to get the win.
Junior Marcus Burrell II hit a line-drive single in the 10th to knock in the game-winning run, Ryan Nakajima was 3-for-5 with an RBI, and Grant Greiner pitched the final three innings, giving up just one earned run and earning the win.
With Bobby Coombs Field still too wet to be playable, the game was relocated to Bard College's turf field, with the Ephs looking for their first win after dropping a doubleheader against Springfield College a week ago. Brandeis, meanwhile, has already had their southern trip and came in with a record of 7-2.Â
The Judges were the first to get on the board, singling in a run in the top of the 3rd, and an inning later, the Ephs tied up the game when a Hank Jacobus groundout plated Nakajima. Another inning later, Williams took its first lead, with Quinn Carlesimo getting the RBI on a walk, pushing Oliver Rey across for a 2-1 lead.
Brandeis tied it up in the 6th, and neither team could break through offensively, with neither squad scoring more than once in their half of an inning. The game remained tied until the 9th, when the Judges got a two-out triple to take a 3-2 lead. Greiner pitched out of the jam and the Ephs went into the bottom of the ninth needing a run. Burrell came up clutch, starting the inning with a double, and scoring two batters later when Nakajima doubled him in to force extras.
After Greiner got a 1-2-3 top half of the 10th, the Ephs used an error to get leadoff man Jacobus on base, and Burrell's two-out single won the game for Williams.
The Ephs used seven pitchers in the game, with Lucas Brandt starting and throwing two shutout innings, and Sam Fraiberg, Issey Gestel, and Peyton Rose each threw a scoreless inning. Nate Rosner went 2-for-4 and Jacobus scored a run and had an RBI.
Williams will be back in action on Wednesday when the team visits RPI in Troy, N.Y. with first pitch scheduled for 4 p.m.
