NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Williams College women's lacrosse team got its fifth win in a row on Saturday, exploding for six goals in the second quarter en route to a XX-XX win over Connecticut College.
The Ephs were led by Franny Donohue, who scored six goals, leading both teams with a season best mark for Williams' leading scorer on the season. Ainsley Abel had three goals and McKenna Dwyer had two goals and two assists.
The first quarter was quiet, with neither team getting on the board until more than five minutes had passed on the game clock, before the hosts took a 1-0 lead, and the teams went back and forth for the rest of the quarter. Donohue scored her first of the game with 8:17 remaining in the quarter, Conn re-took the lead, and Dwyer scored at 3:43 off an assist from Coco Norman.
The Ephs then took control of the game in the second quarter, scoring four straight to take a lead they would never lose. Abel and Norman scored the first two, followed by Donohue with an assist to Cece Tauber, and and Norman from Dwyer. Each team scored twice in the remainder of the quarter, with both Williams goals coming from free positions (Dwyer and Donohue), and the game went into halftime 8-4 in favor of the visitors.
Williams maintained its lead in the third quarter, with each team scoring four goals, and the Ephs got the only two goals in the fourth quarter, keeping a solid distance from the Camels. With the win, Williams moves to 5-1 on the season, 3-1 in the NESCAC, and carries momentum and a five-game win streak into the most difficult stretch of the season.
The Ephs will take on top-five ranked and 9-0 Salisbury University on the road on Monday, and then play again on Tuesday against the University of Scranton, which carries a 4-3 record into their Saturday matchup, having played exclusively top-25 ranked teams in their season thus far. Williams will return from their road trip and face Bates College at Farley Lamb Field on Saturday, March 28 at noon.
