Ephs go 1-1 at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Senior captain and starting pitcher Sadie Leonard compiled a one-hitter during a 2-0 seven-inning victory in Game 1 of a doubleheader against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Friday afternoon at Athena Field.

The Athenas (12-9-1, 3-3 SCIAC) responded by earning a 3-0 win in seven innings during Game 2. The Ephs (3-7) were led offensively in the doubleheader by first-year leadoff batter Miya Fujimoto (3 for 7, 1 walk, 1 stolen base).

During Game 1, Leonard did not relinquish a hit until there was one out in the bottom of the sixth. Leonard struck out the side during the second, fifth and seventh, finishing with 14 strikeouts. Fujimoto went 2-of-4 batting, while junior Justine Dunaway finished with a 2-for-3 effort. Williams totaled seven hits and did not make a single error.

During the fourth, Dunaway connected on a one-out single to center, and then first-year Annabella Rychetsky was inserted as a pinch runner, scoring on an RBI single to shortstop by junior Katie Blanch. The visitors established a two-run lead in the fifth, as an RBI ground out to shortstop by first-year Ayane Rokugawa allowed first-year Cassidy Chew to cross home plate.

During Game 2, senior captain Alysa DeQuiroz went 2 of 2 in the batter's box, while Blanch pitched two scoreless innings of relief in the fifth and sixth, compiling a total of three strikeouts and no walks. Perri Derian (4-1) earned the complete-game win in the circle for the Athenas, giving up no runs and six hits, while striking out two and walking two. Rachel Sapirstein went 2-of-3 batting for the hosts, with one triple and one run scored. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps scored twice in the first inning and added an insurance run in the third.

The Ephs will compete against Pomona-Pitzer Saturday in a doubleheader, with game times set for noon and 2 p.m. Pacific Time at Wig Beach Field in Claremont, California.
