ANNANDALE, N.Y – The Williams College baseball team rallied late but came up just short in a 14-13 loss to Bard College on Wednesday afternoon.
Bard took early control of the game, recording six runs in the first inning. The Raptors added two more in the second and broke the game open in the third, scoring six runs, to extend the lead to 14-1.
Williams got on the board in the third inning, as
Ryan Nakajima singled to left field to drive in
Sasha Palma.
The Ephs began to chip away in the fourth inning, as
Dave Mosrie delivered an RBI single before Palma drew a walk that allowed another run to score on a wild pitch, cutting the deficit to 14-3.
Williams exploded offensively in the fifth inning, putting up seven runs to climb back into the game.
Hank Jacobus drew a bases-loaded walk to start the rally before Mosrie delivered the key swing with a three-run triple to right center.
Quinn Carlesimo added an RBI groundout, while
Oliver Rey and Nakajima each followed with RBI hits to bring the Ephs within 14-10.
The comeback continued in the sixth, as Palma singled to drive in another run and make it 14-11.
In the ninth inning,
Will Scott drove in a run on a groundout before
JH Vaughan added an RBI single to cut the deficit to one. However, the rally came up just short as Bard held on for the 14-13 victory.
The Ephs' offense was fueled by Mosrie, who drove in four runs, while Nakajima added two RBIs in the comeback effort.
Williams returns to action this weekend for its second NESCAC series of the season, opening against Trinity with first pitch set for 3:30 p.m. on Friday afternoon.
