WORCESTER, Mass.
- This weekend, the Williams College men's crew team traveled to Lake Quinsigamond to race MIT, WPI, Washington College and Connecticut College for the Donahue Cup. The Ephs put out five boats across four events and saw quick times across the board. A ripping tailwind provided fast, but choppy conditions.
The first event of the day was the First Varsity Eight, where the Ephs lined up against Connecticut College, MIT, WPI and Washington College. From the start, Williams had a tight race with MIT, finishing second and clocking a time of 5:45.16. MIT won with a time of 5:44.6. WPI (6:03.71), Washington College (6:23.75) and Connecticut College (6:28.16) followed the Engineers and the Ephs.
The Second Varsity Eight race came next, featuring crews from MIT, Conn College and WPI. Williams led the entire way and won with a time of 5:55.96. MIT (6:00.47), WPI (6:17.68) and Connecticut College (6:50.06) followed.
Subsequently was the Third Varsity Eight event, featuring both the Williams Third and Fourth Eights, as well as boats from WPI and Connecticut College. Both Eph crews impressed, taking the top-two spots in the race. The results were as follows: Williams' 3V (6:07.5), Williams' 4V (6:16.98), WPI (6:33.82) and Connecticut College (8:04.17).
The last race of the day for Williams was the Men's Four, where the Ephs lined up against MIT, Washington College and two crews from WPI. Williams finished second in an exciting race behind MIT (7:25.2), while WPI A (7:47.75), Washington College (7:53.15) and WPI B (8:18.32) followed.
After a full day of racing, assistant coach
Patrick Dent had this to say about the results, "The Williams' crews all handled the conditions well and showed some good speed. A couple of the races did not go our way, but the quality of rowing was high and we are happy to have had such fierce competition to help us prepare for the rest of the season."
Next weekend, the Ephs have a doubleheader. On Saturday, Williams will host the Little Three Championships against Wesleyan on Lake Onota in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. On Sunday, the Ephs will face Tufts and Marietta back on Lake Quinsigamond.
