WILLIAMSTOWN, MA – The Williams College baseball team dropped their midweek non-conference game to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, 9-5, on Wednesday afternoon. With the loss, the Ephs fall to 8-15 overall.
Williams struck first in the opening inning, as
Dave Mosrie drove in
Ben Swank with an RBI groundout to give the Ephs a 1–0 lead.
Rensselaer responded in the third, putting together a three-run inning to take the lead. RPI tied the game with an RBI single before adding a two-run single to go ahead 3–1.
The Ephs answered right back in the bottom half of the inning, as Swank came around to score on a wild pitch, and
Sasha Palma followed with an RBI double to center field, evening the score at 3–3.
The Engineers regained the lead in the fourth on an RBI single, and extended their advantage in the sixth, with a three-run double to right field, pushing the lead to 6–3.
Williams continued to chip away in the sixth inning, as
Quinn Carlesimo singled to right to bring home
JH Vaughan. Swank followed with an RBI groundout to cut the lead to one at 6–5.
Despite the late push, the Ephs were unable to complete the comeback. Rensselaer added two insurance runs in the ninth on a two-run single to seal the 8–5 final.
The Ephs return to Bobby Coombs Field on Friday as they host Amherst in game one of their weekend series, beginning at 4:00 p.m.
