WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - The Williams College softball team competed in a pair of pitchers' duels against RPI Wednesday, as the Ephs earned a 2-1, 10-inning win in Game 1 and the Engineers responded with a 2-1, seven-inning triumph during the second game at Cole Field.
The Ephs (17-10, 7-1 NESCAC) were phenomenal on defense, not committing a single error in the doubleheader. Williams held a 13-9 advantage in hits on the day.
The first game proceeded to extra innings scoreless, and then RPI (17-9, 4-2 Liberty League) opened the scoring in the top half of the eighth on a one-out, RBI single down the left-field line by leadoff hitter Sydney Speanburg.

Haley Barrett crossed home on an RBI sacrifice fly by junior
Justine Dunaway. Barrett delivered again in the clutch during the 10th inning, blasting the game-winning, one-run single to left, allowing first-year
Ayane Rokugawa to cross home with the winning run.
Senior captain and starting pitcher
Sadie Leonard earned the complete-game win, giving up no earned runs and striking out a career-high 19 batters. Callie Volker went the distance in the circle for the Engineers and also did not allow any earned runs.
Sophomore
Aprill Medrano went 2-of-4 batting for the hosts, while Evann McDowell finished with a 2-for-3 effort for the visitors.
During the second game, Williams was led by first-year leadoff hitter
Miya Fujimoto (2 for 4) and Barrett (2 of 4). Starter Ava Markert earned the complete-game victory in the circle for the Engineers, giving up one run and seven hits, while striking out four and not walking a single batter.
Junior
Katie Blanch led off the bottom of the fourth with a single to right, and then scored three at-bats later on an RBI off a fielder's choice by sophomore
Aleks Albert.
Lauren Cosselman and McDowell blasted solo home runs in the fifth and sixth, respectively, giving RPI the one-run victory.
The Ephs compete against No. 14-ranked Colby on Saturday in a doubleheader, with game times set for noon and 2 p.m. in Waterville, Maine.
