WATERVILLE, Maine - First-year leadoff batter
Miya Fujimoto of the Williams College softball team went a combined 4-of-7 batting, with one double and one RBI, during a pair of setbacks Saturday afternoon against No. 14-ranked Colby.
The Mules (22-5, 8-2 NESCAC) won Game 1 by a score of 5-2 in seven innings, and then emerged victorious in a 1-0, seven-inning decision during the second game. The Ephs currently sit at 17-12 overall and 7-3 in the conference.
During Game 1, Fujimoto went 2 for 4 in the batter's box, with one double and one RBI, while junior
Katie Blanch recorded a 2-for-3 effort. JuniorÂ
Natalie Carter was strong in relief, not giving up any hits or runs in 2/3 innings.
Leadoff hitter Carissa Cassidy went 3-for-4 batting, with two runs, one double and one RBI, for the hosts. Sharlotte Stazinski earned the complete-game victory, giving up only one earned run in seven innings. Colby held a 10-8 advantage in hits.
Colby raced out to a 4-0 advantage in the first two innings, as the run included an RBI single and sacrifice fly by Ella Wilcox. Williams cut the lead to two with one run in the third and another one during the fourth.
Blanch tallied an RBI single to center in the third, and then Fujimoto tallied a one-run double to the gap in right-center during the fourth. The Mules ended the scoring in the sixth with a one-run double by Cassidy.
During Game 2, each team tallied five hits and not a single error was made in the game, as Fujimoto was 2-of-3 batting. During the bottom of the fifth, Cassidy connected on the game-winning, RBI single up the middle, allowing Josephine Kim to score the winning run.
Sophia Meade earned the complete-game win in the circle for the hosts, striking out four and walking one, while Blanch pitched effectively in six innings for Williams. She also struck out four batters and walked one, while retiring the side in order during the second inning.
The Ephs compete against Smith Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. on Cole Field in Williamstown, Massachusetts.
