Ephs Split Doubleheader with Amherst

AMHERST, Mass. — The Williams College baseball team split a NESCAC doubleheader with Amherst on Saturday, falling 7–1 in game one before bouncing back with a 6–3 victory in game two.

The Ephs ultimately dropped the three-game weekend series, and are now 9-17 overall and 3-6 in the NESCAC.

Game One
Williams struck first in the second inning, as Oliver Rey stole third and came around to score on a throwing error to give the Ephs a 1–0 lead.

Amherst responded quickly in the bottom half, using back-to-back RBI singles to take a 2–1 advantage.

Amherst pulled away in the fifth, using a mix of walks, hits, and a few Williams errors to score four runs and stretch the lead to 6–1. The Mammoths added another in the sixth on a sacrifice fly to make it 7–1.

Game Two
Amherst struck first in the opening inning on an RBI groundout, but Williams responded back quickly in the third inning. Quinn Carlesimo doubled down the left field line to bring home Dave Mosrie and even the score at 1–1.

The Ephs took the lead in the fourth, as Will Scott singled through the left side, with an error in the outfield allowing Rey to score and make it 2–1.

Amherst tied the game in the fifth on a sacrifice fly, but Williams answered in the sixth with two runs to take control. Rey dropped down a bunt single to drive in a run, and Scott followed with an RBI single to extend the lead to 4–2.

Williams added insurance in the later innings, with Hank Jacobus bringing in a run on a sacrifice bunt in the seventh before Scott delivered another RBI single in the eighth to push the lead to 6–2.

Amherst picked up a run in the eighth, but the Ephs held on to secure the 6–3 victory.

Scott led the offensive effort with three hits and three RBIs, while Rey also contributed three hits and an RBI.

Matt Keene earned the win on the mound as he pitched seven full innings, allowing three runs off just four hits.

Williams returns to Bobby Coombs Field on Tuesday, April 21st, as they host Bard at 4:00 p.m.
