MIDDLETOWN, Ct. - The Williams College women's lacrosse team lost 11-3 at #3-ranked Wesleyan University on Saturday in Connecticut, dropping the team to 9-5 overall and 5-4 in the NESCAC.
The Ephs played well throughout but could not find their way past Wesleyan goalie Izzy Weintraub, who made 12 saves on the day. Despite the final score, Williams was only out-shot 22-17, and 16-13 in shots on goal.
Katy McCullough scored two of the Ephs' goals, and
Franny Donohue added the third.
Anna Miller also had an assist.
Charlotte Cote made six saves in goal for the Ephs.
The Cardinals scored first in the game before McCullough scored with 8:33 left in the first quarter, and then the Ephs kept it scoreless until 1:33 remained in the opening session when the hosts took the 2-1 lead. The second quarter saw three goals from Wesleyan and the score was 6-1 at the half. In the third quarter, Wesleyan continued its advantage, extending the lead to 8-1, and the hosts got two more to start the fourth quarter before the Ephs pulled one back with 9:42 left in the game. After Wesleyan scored one minute later, Williams scored the final goal of the game with 6:55 left.
Defensively, Donohue caused four turnovers, and both
Reece Willison and
Katie Fitzgerald each caused three.
Paige Nelson led the team with four ground balls with Donohue, Fitzgerald, Willison and
Meaghan Day each collecting three.
The Ephs will close out the regular season on Wednesday at home against Middlebury College, with the game starting at 6pm. The result of that game will determine Williams' opponent in the opening round of the NESCAC tournament.
