WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - Led by seniors
Mia Thomann and
Jane Ladaga, the Williams College women's tennis team topped Hamilton College 7-0 on Saturday at the Torrance M. Hunt Tennis Courts. The Ephs put together a comprehensive performance to earn a victory in which the team did not drop a set in any match.
Seniors Thomann and Ladaga both won in singles and doubles as their careers were celebrated by coaches, teammates, families and fans.
The Ephs started the day with three quick wins in the doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead overall. Ladaga partnered with
Katelyn Wu at #3 and won 6-1 in 28 minutes, and Thomann was at #2 with
Ayanna Varma, and their match ended at nearly the same time in a 6-2 win. The #1 match lasted longer but had a similar result, with
Julia Zhang and
Ahn Lin partnering to win 6-2.
Williams was similarly in control in singles. The matches at #4 and #5 ended within seconds of each other, with
Margaux Molyneux winning 6-2, 6-4 at #4, and
Zoe Yao earning a 6-1, 6-3 victory at #5. Soon after, Zhang wrapped up her match at #3 with a 6-1, 6-4 win, and Varma earned a 6-4, 6-1 victory at #2.
Those victories put the Ephs up 5-0 with only the seniors left on court. At #1, Thomann won her first set 6-4 and stepped it up in the second, winning 6-2. The final match was at #6, where Ladaga kept her nerve in a first set tiebreak to win 7-6 (7-3) and then moving more quickly through the second set with a 6-3 win.
The win moves Williams to a 10-5 overall record and 4-3 in the conference ahead of Sunday's rivalry battle with Amherst at home, with the match starting at 11am.
