Men's Crew

Ephs compete at Lake Quinsigamond Sunday

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Williams College men's crew team traveled to Lake Quinsigamond Sunday to compete against Tufts, Marietta and WPI. The Ephs raced hard across tight contests, with some bouts being decided by less than a second. Despite moderate rain, conditions were great with flat water and little wind.

The first varsity eight started off the day, and Williams had a strong race, placing second to Tufts. The finish order was as follows: Tufts (5:59.9), Williams (6:02.46), Marietta (6:11.93) and WPI (6:17.13).

The second varsity eight race came next, and the Ephs impressed, winning with a time of 6:07.28. Tufts (6:11.68), Marietta (6:20.16) and WPI (6:31.91) followed.

Subsequently was the third varsity eight event, which featured Williams' third and fourth boats. The Williams' third boat was within a second of Tufts, but the Jumbos ultimately prevailed. The finish order was Tufts 3V (6:17.1), Williams 3V (6:17.82), Tufts 4V (6:23.13), Williams 4V (6:29.6) and WPI (6:50.07).

The last race of the day for the Ephs was the men's four, where Williams lined up against two crews from Tufts and two from WPI, placing third. The Jumbos' "A" four (7:07.5) won. Tufts B (7:18.75), Williams (7:32.33), WPI A (7:33.77) and WPI B (7:44.31) followed.

After an exciting morning, head coach Marc Mandel had this to say, "A big thank you to WPI and Tufts for letting us race as a guest in the Baker Cup. We could not have asked for better conditions. Each crew walked away from yesterday's races against Wesleyan with many lessons learned, and assistant coach Patrick Dent and I could not be prouder of how we reset, showed up today and raced extremely hard. While we would have loved to have our bows ahead in some close finishes with Tufts, historically the deepest team in our league, we certainly feel thankful for the second racing opportunity this weekend."
