MIDDLEBURY, Vt. — The Williams College baseball team held a late lead, but Middlebury rallied in the ninth to force extra innings and hand the Ephs a 6–5 loss in the opener of their three-game NESCAC series.
After a scoreless start, Williams broke through in the sixth inning, as
Will Scott delivered an RBI double down the left field line to score
Hank Jacobus and give the Ephs a 1–0 lead.
Middlebury answered in the bottom half, with a tripled to right center to even the score at one apiece.
The Ephs regained control in the eighth with a big three-run inning. Jacobus came around to score on a wild pitch before Scott launched a two-run home run to right center, making his first home run on the season. Williams added another run later in the inning on a Middlebury error, extending their lead to 5–1.
The Panthers began to chip away late, scoring on a sacrifice fly in the eighth before a two out rally in the ninth inning. A two-run double and a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch brought Middlebury all the way back to tie the game at 5–5.
In the 10th, Middlebury completed the comeback with a walk-off solo home run to center field to secure the 6–5 victory.
Scott paced the Ephs at the plate with a home run, a double, and three RBIs, while
Ryan Nakajima and
Hank Jacobus each added two hits.
Williams returns to action tomorrow for a doubleheader at Middlebury, beginning at noon.
