Ephs earn NESCAC split with Wesleyan on senior day

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - The Williams College softball team defeated Wesleyan, 3-0, in Game 1, and then the Cardinals responded with a 2-0 victory during the second game Sunday afternoon on senior day at Cole Field.

The Ephs (20-14, 9-5 NESCAC) honored seniors Sadie Leonard, Sidney Miller, Alysa DeQuiroz and Louisa Coughlin in between the two games. The four student-athletes have won two NESCAC Championships and guided the program to three consecutive NCAA Division III Tournament appearances.

During Game 1, Leonard earned the complete-game win in the circle, giving up no runs, two walks and four hits, while striking out 14 batters in seven innings of work. Leonard retired the side in order during the third and fourth innings, improving to 14-4 on the season. On offense, sophomore Lauren Davis (2 of 2, 1 RBI, 1 run) and first-year Miya Fujimoto (2 for 3, 1 run) led the way.

For the Cardinals (17-14, 7-9 NESCAC), Waverly Smart reached base three times, going 2 for 2 in the batter's box, with one walk. Pitcher Whitney Gigante worked the entire six innings in the circle and only gave up two earned runs.

The Ephs held an 8-4 advantage in hits and each team made one error. During the bottom of the second, junior Katie Blanch connected on a leadoff double to right. She scored two at-bats later on a sacrifice fly to center by Davis, and then Fujimoto raced across home later in the inning on a one-run single to center by junior Emily Borrazzo.

Davis began the bottom of the sixth with an infield single, and then scored two at-bats later on a sacrifice fly to center by Borrazzo, ending the scoring in Game 1.

During the second game, the Ephs were led by Miller (2 for 4, 1 double), Blanch (2 for 3) and DeQuiroz (2 for 4). For the second consecutive game, Williams held an 8-4 advantage in hits. Blanch pitched the entire seven innings for the hosts and did not give up any earned runs, while striking out six and walking two.

Ella DeCrescenzo earned the complete-game victory in the circle for Wesleyan, giving up no runs in seven innings and only walking one batter.

Sam Chappell opened the scoring for the Cardinals in the fifth, leading off with a single down the left-field line, and then scoring on an error during the ensuing at-bat. Lucia Zaremba tallied an unearned run off an error in the sixth for the visitors to end the scoring.

The Ephs compete at Amherst in a doubleheader Saturday, with game times set for noon and 2 p.m.
