SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Williams College volleyball team split its final two matches at the Skidmore Classic on Saturday afternoon, falling to St. John Fisher in a hard-fought five-set battle before bouncing back to defeat Roger Williams in four sets. With the split, the Ephs move to 4-2 on the season.
Williams opened the day against St. John Fisher with a strong start, taking the first set 25-21. The Cardinals responded by claiming the next two sets, 25-23 and 26-24, to take a 2-1 lead. The Ephs battled back in the fourth set, earning a 25-23 victory to force a decisive fifth set. In a tightly contested final frame, St. John Fisher edged Williams, 18-16, to secure the match.
Chidimma Obi and
Adalena Rodgers led the Ephs offensively, each recording double-digit kills in game one. Obi posted 12 kills, five digs and four blocks, while Rodgers put up her second double-double of the season with 11 kills and a team-high 17 digs.
Kate Lane added nine kills, five digs and a team-high five service aces, while
Keely Campuzano contributed seven kills and four blocks.
Morgan Daetz posted a double-double of her own with a team-high 28 assists and 13 digs.
Lilly Carstens added 13 assists and eight digs, while
Eve Kaplan anchored the defensive effort with 16 digs.
The Ephs bounced back in their second match of the day, taking the first two sets against Roger Williams by scores of 25-20 and 25-16. After the Hawks responded with a 25-16 victory in the third set, Williams regained control in the fourth, edging Roger Williams 27-25 to close out the four-set victory.
First Year
Ellie Simons powered the Williams' offensive in game two, recording a career-high 15 kills to go along with nine digs.
Sophia Baer added 10 kills, while Rodgers finished with nine kills and nine digs.
Maya Thompson added eight kills of her own in game two's victory.
Emily Cao paced the Ephs with 25 assists and 10 digs to record her first double-double of the season, while Carstens added 21 assists. Kaplan led Williams defensively with 20 digs, bringing her total to 36 digs across the two matches.
Williams returns to action on Sept. 16, when the Ephs travel to Poughkeepsie, N.Y., to take on Vassar at 7:00 p.m.
