WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Senior midfielder Andrew Coelho buried his third collegiate game-winning goal and first-year midfielder Nick Appleton recorded his first career point with an assist for the 11th-ranked Williams College men's soccer team during a 1-0 non-conference victory over Gordon Tuesday on Cole Field.

"After being on the road last week, it was great to be back on Cole Field to host a gritty and skillful Gordon team," said sixth-year head coach Steffen Siebert. "I am proud of the effort from the whole team, which was rewarded with our first shutout of the season. We are looking to our Maine trip this weekend to test ourselves against another two conference opponents."

Junior goalkeeper Kai Darrell earned his first individual shutout of the season and fourth of his career, making five saves for the Ephs (4-0-0, 3-0-0 NESCAC). He improved to 4-0-0 on the season and 8-1-2 in his collegiate career.

Williams scored the lone goal during the 55th minute, as Appleton played a through ball off a free kick from just beyond the left attacking side of the 18-yard box. Coelho made a run into the box and tipped the pass in front of the goalkeeper into the back of the net.

The Ephs held a 33-11 advantage in shots, to go along with a 15-5 lead in shots on goal. Goalkeeper Riley Calemmo was outstanding for the Fighting Scots (2-3-1, 0-1-0 Conference of New England), turning aside 14 shots.

Sophomore forward JJ Ruehlemann led all student-athletes with seven shots, while junior forward Alex Bethencourt put all four of his shots on target. The hosts led the corner-kick statistic, 8-3.

The Ephs compete against Colby Saturday at 2 p.m. in Waterville, Maine.
