WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — A steady rain made scoring difficult in the third and final round of the Williams Fall Invitational on Sunday as all but one of the 17 teams in the field posted their worst score of the weekend. But the host Ephs still managed to finish in the top half of the field, carding a 298-292-322—912 (+60) to place eighth overall.
The one team that avoided the fate of the weather was Pomona-Pitzer, which was a mere 10-over par (294) en route to taking the team title with an 877 (+25), 11 strokes ahead of yesterday's leader, Trinity.
Sophomore Nick Smith fared the best for Williams today by sinking one birdie and a dozen pars while shooting a 5-over 76, matching his total from the first two rounds to finish 14th overall at 10-over (223).
The other three golfers to score for the Ephs were sophomore Owen Barber (+10), and seniors Owen Nielsen (+11) and Alex Moller (+12). While the two Owens each had one birdie in their respective rounds, Moller sank four after recovering from a shaky start to his day.
Amherst's Andre Zhang and Tufts' JP Noone finished tied atop the leaderboard with a 215 (+2). The two squared off in a playoff on the 480-yard, par-5 first hole, and Zhang sank a birdie to claim medalist honors.
Next weekend, Williams will travel to Brunswick, Maine, to play in the Bowdoin Invitational at Brunswick Golf Club. Saturday's action starts at 7:30 a.m. and the final round on Sunday will tee off at 8:30 a.m.
