MIDDLEBURY, VT. — The Williams College volleyball team added two conference victories to its 2007 total Saturday at Pepin Gym on the campus of Middlebury College, sweeping Bates 3-0 and defeating a tough-minded Bowdoin squad, 3-1.

The Ephs improved to 17-5 overall, 5-0 in conference play. They play at archrival Amherst Tuesday at 7 p.m.

“Any time you have two matches in one day, contributions are needed from every one and that's what we received today,” Ephs head coach Fran Vandermeer said. “Melissa (Pun) and Chelsea (Kubal) gave us outstanding defense on the left side today, and they finished a lot of plays and gave us great energy. Emily (Avis) did a nice job distributing the ball. I think Bowdoin is a very good team, they played very good defense and got to a lot of balls, but we were able to get to our share too.”

The Ephs opened the day with a 30-17 game one win over Bates, then took game two by a 30-28 score. Avis made sure Williams won the third game, serving 20 points in a row at one point to ensure the Ephs closed out the sweep.

Kubal had seven kills, 14 digs and two aces in the victory, while Pun contributed 13 kills and 13 digs. Avis compiled 26 assists along with eight digs and five aces. Senior captain Liz Hirschhorn had 16 assists, nine digs and two kills, while Whitney Hitchcock threw in seven kills and two aces. First-year Nicole Ballon-Landa had five kills and three blocks, and Andrea Scioscia made nine digs.

The Ephs jumped out to a 2-0 lead in their match against Bowdoin, taking game one 30-21 and the second game 30-26. Bowdoin bounced back to steal the third game, 30-24, but the Ephs closed out a nice weekend with a 30-19 game four victory.

Pun and Kubal played strong again, with Pun registering 15 kills and 21 digs and Kubal compiling 13 kills and 23 digs. Hitchcock had five kills, five aces and five blocks, while Avis notched 44 assists and 14 digs. Ballon-Landa contributed 13 kills and four blocks, while Scioscia was solid again with 13 digs.
